Whenever someone brings up the topic of boot space, it's time to practice your best Tetris skills. Enter the Hyundai i10, a small car that's a bit like a TARDIS – you'll be surprised by how much you can cram into it. I mean, who needs a boot the size of a ballroom when you're trying to park in a space fit for a toddler's tricycle? The current model of the i10 boasts a boot space of 252 liters, which in 'real world' terms is about a trunkful of weekly shopping, a couple of small suitcases, or a Labrador (although I wouldn't advise closing the boot on the Labrador).
So how has the i10's boot been expanding over the years – like my waistline after the holidays? Well, they managed to find an extra armful of liters in the second generation launched in 2013, which now seems to have plateaued at 252 liters. If you fold the rear seats down (easier than persuading them to go on a diet, I assure you), you get up to 1050 liters from the third generation onward. In essence, the first generation started us off with 225 liters, which wasn't bad unless you're a golfer carrying a party's worth of drivers.
In the Hyundai family, the i10 is like the younger sibling with the smaller room. The Hyundai Kona Elektro plays the bigger brother with 332 liters, and the Hyundai i30 is like the cousin who has 395 liters of space for activities. All this culminates to the Hyundai Santa Fe, the grand patriarch of the family, boasting a vast, cavernous rear of 634 liters, where one could lose small children for hours at a time.
Looking beyond its Hyundai brethren, how does the i10 stack up? Well, compared to the Suzuki SX4, the i10 trails it by nearly a gym bag's worth of space (SX4 at 270 liters). Against the Ford Ka+, it's nip and tuck with both offering the same 270 liters, but the i10 feels more nimble on its treads. There's also the Ford Ka with its Wayne Rooney-sized 186 liters, making the i10 look like a sumo wrestler in comparison. The Honda Jazz outplays it with a boot capacity that's a juggernaut at 380 liters, suitable for a small jazz band's instrument collection. Still, the i10 holds its own against similarly sized vehicles, and with its sensible dimensions, you'll be threading the needle in traffic while others lumber along like beached whales.
